Job Summary:
Nationwide Skilled Trades is seeking a highly skilled 1st Class Pipe Welder for shipyard operations in Norfolk, VA.
The ideal candidate will be proficient in various pipe welding techniques and materials used in ship construction and repair.
This position requires precision, efficiency, and a thorough knowledge of welding codes and standards relevant to the maritime industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform high-quality welds on pipe systems aboard ships and marine vessels.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols.
- Weld various pipe materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper-nickel using GTAW (TIG), SMAW (stick), and GMAW (MIG) processes.
- Ensure welds meet shipyard standards and comply with ASME, NAVSEA, or ABS codes.
- Conduct pre- and post-weld inspections; perform repairs as needed.
- Work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and under varying weather conditions.
- Fit and tack weld piping components in accordance with layout drawings.
- Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- Collaborate with pipefitters, inspectors, and supervisors to ensure project timelines are met.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3-5 years of pipe welding experience in a shipyard or marine environment.
- Proficient in GTAW, SMAW, and/or GMAW welding techniques.
- Ability to pass 6G pipe welding tests (carbon steel and/or copper-nickel, stainless, etc.).
- Must be able to read and understand blueprints and welding symbols.
- Strong attention to detail and quality craftsmanship.
- Capable of working in tight spaces and physically demanding environments.
- Must have own tools and PPE suitable for marine welding work.
Preferred Certifications:
- Current or recent NAVSEA, ABS, or AWS D1.1 certifications.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Maritime Safety Certification.
- Brazing qualifications (if required for specific materials).
Work Environment:
- Indoor/outdoor shipyard setting with exposure to heat, cold, noise, and marine conditions.
- Physically demanding work involving climbing, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), bending, and prolonged standing.
- May involve overtime, weekends, and night shifts depending on project needs.
